Confessions, confessions!

My wife’s a beige babe, and I think I’m turning into one too. It’s funny because I don’t exactly know when this happened. One day, our apartment started changing hues. Our once emerald green couch transformed into a pristine white one. The yellow throw pillows turned into a sophisticated brownish-white, and our black checkered carpet became a cozy tufted brownish beige. I have to admit, I enjoyed the change. The new colors brought a certain lightness to our space, and as a guy, I let my wife make most of the decor choices while I basked in the visual transformation.

I noticed myself feeling lighter and more joyful as the sun filtered into our beige-toned apartment. I didn’t think much about it until my wife pointed out that we were inadvertently following a trend. “We’re beige babes,” she said. I had no idea what that meant. She explained that being a beige babe involves acquiring more beige items for your home and wardrobe. Beige, it turns out, is the new black.

Curious, I did some research. It seems that young people are gravitating toward beige because it’s clean, versatile, and gender-neutral. You can dress your child in beige, and it works as a hand-me-down for any gender. But beyond the practical aspects, there’s something luxurious about beige. It’s become the color of understated elegance.

This got me thinking—are we consciously choosing beige, or is beige being marketed to us as a symbol of luxury? I suspect it’s a bit of both. We all work hard and want to enjoy the finer things in life, even if those things are just aesthetically pleasing items from Amazon or Target. And when you look closely, you’ll see that the color of many of these “luxury” items is beige.

Take our recent appliance hunt, for example. Our stand mixer broke, and we decided to get a new one. We landed on a beautiful beige KitchenAid mixer called “Sandstone.” It was sleek and stylish, and we loved it. A few months later, we were looking at pots and pans from the brand Our Place, and guess what? Their best-selling color was a beige tone. It’s everywhere.

Even in tech, beige is making its mark. When buying an iPhone or an Apple Watch, the choices are often limited to black, blue, and something called “Starlight,” which is basically beige. For many women, a beige watch feels more feminine and stylish than a black or blue one.

This trend isn’t new. Beige has long been associated with luxury. Look at cars from the 90s—many had a beige interior. My own 90s car had a gold exterior and a beige interior, which my grandmother told me was the epitome of luxury back in the day. Beige has been around, quietly asserting its elegance.

So, is there anything wrong with being a beige babe? I don’t think so. As a 32-year-old guy, I embrace it. Our beige-toned home feels light and airy. The sunlight bounces off the walls, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. It’s not just a trend; it’s a lifestyle choice that brings a sense of calm and sophistication to our space.

Of course, trends come and go. Back in the day, bright colors and funky shapes were all the rage. Now, it’s all about subtlety and serenity. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m not saying I’ll start wearing beige head to toe, but I appreciate the luxury and tranquility it brings to our home.

So, let’s embrace being beige babes. There’s a reason this color has stood the test of time. It’s versatile, calming, and yes, luxurious. As a hardworking family, we deserve a little luxury in our lives. If beige is the color of luxury right now, so be it. Let’s not be mad at it. Instead, let’s welcome the lightness it brings.

Our round-up is:

Beige might be the current trend, but who knows what the future holds? For now, I’m happy to be a beige babe. It’s brought a new level of elegance and joy to our home. So, go ahead, embrace the beige. You might be surprised at how much brighter your life can become.
